Winterizing Your Pressure Washer

As we enter the twilight of the pressure washing season, it’s time to start thinking about protecting your pressure washer from the colder months ahead. Winterizing your pressure washer is essential for ensuring that it stays in top condition and ready to use when spring rolls around.

Like many outdoor tools, pressure washers can be damaged if exposed to freezing temperatures. Water left inside the pump or hoses can expand when it freezes, causing serious damage to the internal components. To avoid costly repairs or the need to replace your equipment, it’s important to take preventive measures before the first frost.  Here are a couple simple solutions to keeping your pressure washer in great shape.

Solution 1: Store in a Freeze-Protected Area

The easiest way to protect your pressure washer is by storing it in a location that will not experience freezing temperatures. A garage, shed, or basement will work as long as it stays above freezing (32℉).  However, for those without access to such storage, winterizing your pressure washer is crucial.

Solution 2: Use a Pump Protector

A pump protector is a solution that helps prevent freezing and corrosion inside your pressure washer. A popular option is Karcher’s Pump Guard, or other similar products. These products not only protect the pump from freezing temperatures but also contain additives that help prevent corrosion and mineral deposits from building up during periods of non-use.

Here’s how to use it:

  1. Flush Out the Water: Start by draining all the water from the pump, hose, and spray gun to ensure there’s no water left inside.
  2. Add the Pump Protector: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to inject the pump protector into the system. Most products come with a simple attachment or applicator that makes the process easy.
  3. Run the Pump Briefly: After adding the solution, turn the pressure washer on for a few seconds to allow the solution to circulate through the pump and hoses. This ensures that the protector reaches all parts of the system.

By following these simple steps, you can protect your pressure washer from winter damage and ensure it’s ready to go for next season. Taking the time to winterize your equipment prevents costly repairs, saving you money in the long run. You’ll be ready to tackle your next pressure washing project with ease when warmer weather returns!
